Classical Music Instrument Workshops

The Sunnyvale Philharmonic Orchestral Enrichment Workshops is a series of masterclass-style workshops designed to provide aspiring musicians with valuable learning and performance opportunities.

Applicants can choose to join as auditors or submit a video to be considered as an active participant. 

May 5, 5-7:15pm – Upper Strings Workshop Instructors

Terra Warger is a violinist and pedagogue, recently moved to the Bay Area. She has a Masters degree in Pedagogy and Performance from the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University, and a Bachelor’s degree in Violin Performance from Arizona State University. She has taught at major universities, including the University of Kentucky and University of North Texas where she was the Assistant Director of the String Project. Ms. Terra is the Director of the Suzuki Music School of San Jose, and directs the String Project at San Jose State University. She is a member of the Suzuki Association of the Americas and is committed to lifelong learning. When Ms. Terra isn’t teaching, she’s out hiking or biking with her family, petting her 2 cats, or gardening. Dai Yang is a classical music enthusiast and primarily a violinist. He has played violin and viola in the Googler Orchestra since 2016. In the past, he has played violin in numerous orchestras including California All Southern (SCSBOA), California All State (CODA), and Honor Orchestra of America (Music For All). He has played both as concertmaster and soloist with Irvine Young Concert Artists (IYCA), and has collaborated with musicians at the Berklee College of Music while studying mathematics at MIT, as well as the Apple Infinite Orchestra for a joint performance at San Jose State University. His favorite violinist is Jascha Heifetz and his favorite symphony is Gustav Mahler’s Resurrection Symphony.

May 12, 5-7:15pm – Lower Strings Workshop Instructors

Oshagan Merjanian completed the Bachelor’s Degree in Cello Performance at Cal State University, Northridge (CSUN), the Master’s in Cello Performance from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and the Certificate in Music Performance at the University of Houston (UH). His awards include the CSUN Arts Council Scholarship for Extraordinary Achievement in Music, the Gluck Foundation Scholarship, and the Mangasar M. Mangasarian Fellowship. He was principal cellist for the CSUN Symphony Orchestra as well as the UCLA Opera Orchestra. He was chosen to be cellist for the competitive Samuel Goldberg Honors String Quartet at CSUN, the UCLA Gluck Cello Quartet, and the highly selective AURA Contemporary Ensemble at UH. He takes great pride in teaching cello to students of all ages both privately and as a faculty member at CSMA. He is especially passionate about beginning music education for very young children using the Suzuki Method. Website: https://www.oshagancello.com/

Stephanie Wu is a cellist acclaimed for her “spirited, emotionally immediate” playing (The Washington Post) and “plush, singing tone” (San Francisco Classical Voice). She made her solo debut at the age of 17 with the National Symphony Orchestra as a winner of their Young Soloists’ Competition. Since then, she has collaborated with musicians from the Vienna Philharmonic, Berlin Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, and YouTube Symphony, performing at world-renowned venues such as the Sydney Opera House, Kennedy Center, and Suntory Hall. Currently the Assistant Principal Cellist of the Berkeley Symphony, Stephanie is also a dedicated educator, coaching cellists at Gunn High School and young musicians throughout Palo Alto Unified School District. Stephanie is passionate about inspiring the next generation to experience the transformative power of music. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Harvard University in Social Studies and Music, she further honed her craft with a Master’s in Cello Performance from the Royal Northern College of Music as a recipient of the Associated Royal Schools of Music Postgraduate International Scholarship. May 19, 5-7:15pm – Winds Workshop Instructors

Dr. Brittany Trotter leads a diverse career as an educator, soloist, and collaborator. She is the Assistant Professor of Flute and Program Director of Woodwinds at the University of the Pacific’s Conservatory of Music. Trotter has been awarded first prize in several competitions including the FNMC’s 2024 Flute Artist Competition and semi-finalist in the 2017 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition. She regularly performs, teaches, and serves as a guest lecturer throughout the United States and performed at numerous music festivals including the National Flute Association Convention where she was a featured soloist in the 2020 virtual summer series celebration concert series. Trotter is the recipient of the NFA’s 2020 Graduate Research Competition for her dissertation entitled, Examining Music Hybridity and Cultural Influences in Valerie Coleman’s Wish Sonatine and Fanmi Imén. A native of Laurel, Mississippi, Trotter has received degrees from the University of Southern Mississippi (B.M., B.M.E.), University of Wyoming (M.M.), and West Virginia University (D.M.A., Certificate of University Teaching. Trevor Grant is a bassoonist, woodwind doubler, and music educator, based in California’s Bay Area. Originally from the Central Valley, he began playing saxophone at age 10, later transitioning to bassoon in high school and developing a love for orchestral performance. He pursued his music degree at San Jose State University, earning a Bachelor’s of Music in Bassoon Performance under Dr. Yueh Chou. Grant’s musical endeavors have taken him to concert halls across the USA and Europe, including Estonia, Finland, Latvia, and Lithuania. He currently holds the 2nd bassoon position with the Master Sinfonia Chamber Orchestra in Los Altos, CA, and frequently substitutes for other local ensembles such as the San Jose Wind Symphony and Redwood Symphony on bassoon and contrabassoon.

Eligibility: Musicians aged 12 and above, both SYP members and non-members.

Who Should Apply:

  • Dedicated students seeking to improve their performance skills, musicality, and understanding of classical music.
  • Students interested in exploring different instruments and styles of classical music.

Workshop Fees Fees are non-refundable, except in the event of workshop cancellation.

  • All 3 Workshops: $200 per applicant (Discounted Price)
  • Individual Workshops: $95 per applicant

Participation Options:

  • Auditor: All applicants who complete the application form and pay the registration fee will participate as auditors.
  • Active Participant:
    • Limited to 4 active participants per workshop.
    • Selection is based on application materials and a submitted performance video.
    • To apply as an active participant:
      • Prepare a piece of your choice.
      • Submit a maximum 5-minute video recording of your performance by April 1, 2025, via Google Form or via email to contact@sunnyvaleyouthphilharmonic.org (Subject Line: SYP Enrichment Workshop Active Participant Submission).
      • Fees are non-refundable.* Participants need to pay the registration fee upon registration to be considered in the active participant selection process.
      • Active participant selections will be announced on April 30, 2025.
  • Current SYP members will be given priority consideration for active participation.
