Our Story

Our dream of starting a youth orchestra has been years in the making. In 2018, we founded the Emerging Cultures Society, a non-profit organization focused on cultural exchange through music and the arts. Although the COVID-19 pandemic delayed our plans, we persisted, and in 2024, the Sunnyvale Youth Philharmonic was born. This orchestra is a place where students are recognized for their unique qualities and potential, while being challenged to grow beyond their comfort zones. Our five-year goal for the SYP is to take our students on tours and to program an eclectic and challenging repertoire with music from across the globe, played by the amazing young musicians who have trusted us with their musical education. We believe in joy, passion, and in excelling in what we do without losing sight of the fun. Our motto is simple: making music should be fun and joyful!

After nearly twenty years working in music and visual arts education in the United States and Brazil, we founded the Sunnyvale Youth Philharmonic. Inspired by one of his mentors, the late Maestro Michael Morgan (1957-2021), former Director of the Oakland Symphony, Maestro Alan has long been committed to diversifying the world of classical music through youth education. Like Maestro Morgan, who began his career at the Washington DC Youth Orchestra, Alan believes in fostering young talent. Alan conducted numerous orchestras across the world, and was Artistic Director at the prestigious Napa Valley Youth Philharmonic for four years, touring with the orchestra and performing at some of the world’s most famous concert halls. Tatiane has worked in museums and art organizations in New York and has taught at several colleges and universities. She completed a Ph.D. in Visual Studies, from the University of California, Santa Cruz. We both have a deep commitment to providing a supportive and nurturing environment for our youth.

As a family, we have lived and worked in the Bay Area since 2015 and chose it as our home and the home for the SYP because of its strong sense of community. We believe everyone belongs in the field of classical music. To reflect the rich multiculturalism of the South Bay, the Sunnyvale Youth Philharmonic, under Alan’s baton, aims to offer a nurturing educational environment where all our students can learn and grow together.

We are proud to say that our student population is made up of talented, hard-working, young musicians. The students in our two current orchestra programs, range from ages 8-18 and live throughout the Santa Clara County, including Sunnyvale, Santa Clara, Cupertino, Mountain View, Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, Los Gatos, Palo Alto, and Pacifica.

We know we are building something special and hope you will be part of it!

In joy,

Alan and Tatiane
